It is no secret that an engaged workforce drives results.

If you look at some of the most successful businesses from a growth perspective, you can see that the CEO and leaders of these organizations have this figured out. Take Starbucks for example; their CEO, Howard Schultz, has been CEO of the company since 1987. He has led his organization through thirty years of successful transition and the company still shows strong management scores and growth numbers – he has consistently grown both ROE and ROIC over the past ten years and has less than 1.14 years in debt/income! This is an amazing accomplishment for any company and they’ve had this kind of success because Howard not only understands the wants and needs of his customers, he also understands how to relate to and motivate his associates. He clearly defines the “why” and “the benefit” for associates and has learned to empathize with them while still holding them accountable for driving results. This is a utopia for any business, and yet, so many businesses fail because they miss these two critical aspects of leadership.
